One month on the road – 16/11/2021

I have now been traveling for one month and have spent a little more than 1,600 km on my bicycle. And so far, my backside is holding up pretty well. If anything, it’s my knees that I notice. At the moment, it feels like real November weather: foggy, grey, and everything is damp. The weather is just like it is at Lake Constance. And yet, I am in another country, lying in my tent, listening to the absolute silence outside. It’s crazy to think about what you can achieve purely through your own strength. One month ago, I started at Lake Constance and suddenly I’m lying in a tent somewhere in Croatia. This cycling journey has taken me to wonderful, unfamiliar places, brought inspiring people into my path, and allowed me to get to know myself in a completely new way. With all the many moments and encounters, I couldn’t even say which one was the most beautiful or most special. What I love looking back on are my camping spot directly at Lake Iseo, my stay with Uwe near Monza, meeting Antje, the hike near Ljubljana with my Warmshowers host, and the first kilometers at the beginning of the journey. The strangest moment happened today: I was attacked by a Shetland pony. I never would have thought that was even possible, but this pony was more like a sheepdog. It bit into my bags, reared up several times, and eventually even jumped partly onto me and into my bike. I had absolutely no idea what was happening because I always thought I knew how to handle horses—but this one completely overwhelmed me. Luckily, everything turned out fine. Somehow, exactly these kinds of moments are what make the journey special. You never know what crazy thing might happen next or what the next day will bring. Just starting each new situation and each new day with an open mind and simply living life.
